Today's Thought

Each day I receive the Runner's World Quote of the Day, here is today's:

Winning has nothing to do with racing.
Most days don't have races anyway.
Winning is about struggle and effort and optimism, and
never, ever, ever giving up.
- Amby Burfoot, The Runner's Guide to the Meaning of Life

I think this is so true! I am getting nervous about race day, but I know it's silly. I am doing the hard part now, each time I go out running, further and further. Each time I push my speed and my time on the treadmill, I am doing the hard part. Race day is the celebration of all this hard work. As for 'winning', it would be super cool to get a medal that is for placing (not only participation), but the fact that I am out there is enough for me. Right now. I am too competitive to stay happy with 'participant' for ever, but right now it's just fine with me.

The Wine and Dine starts at 10pm. Given that I will be far back in the corrals, I am thinking I won't actually start until about 10:30pm. For those of you who have raced late at night or super early in the morning:

- Did you adjust your sleep schedule leading up to the race?
- Did you adjust how/when you ate leading up to the race?

  1. I love that quote! So very true. I can't help with the late races, I'm sure you'll figure it out. And a participant medal is still awesome, you are still doing things that so many people can't! (but I do get what you're saying)

  2. A participant medal is still a huge accomplishment, you're right! Thanks! The deeper I get into this, the more and more I see just how much of it is mental stamina and an inner monologue.
