Recovering

I am still recovering from my 11 miles on Tuesday. My legs aren't sore anymore, but I have been tired! I was going to do my 30 minutes yesterday, but ended up putting it off until today. I think that all the protein I have been having has helped me recover too - protein shakes, power bars and roasted chicken as well as the yummy pasta salad I made with tuna the other day.

It really is amazing to me that I went 11 miles. I've never thought of myself as an athlete, and I still don't think of myself as an athlete. I am settling into the idea that I am a runner, but it's still in the context of exercise not as a sport. Do you consider yourself an athlete or is this simply your chosen form of exercise? Can you be an athlete and not place in races?

  1. I don't really consider myself an athlete. Or at least it's not a word I'd use to describe myself. I'd say runner, or active person.

Have you tried an ice bath after a long run? I find it helps my body tremendously, I'm rarely sore after long runs.

  2. I really don't like being cold and have yet to try an ice bath. I really should give it a try....

  3. My sophomore year of college I was in the second varsity boat on the crew team. We didn't win a single race the entire spring season. We actually didn't even place, and came in last in several. Yet we were still athletes.

Winning doesn't make you an athlete. Getting out there and pushing yourself to your personal limits makes you an athlete. I enjoy running and biking, and I do both with the understanding that I am highly unlikely to ever place or win in a race on either. But I'm still an athlete...and so are you. You are an athlete and you are a runner. :)

  4. Sure you can be an athlete and not place in races!!! I surely consider myself an athlete and I place in VERY few races that I run!! Congrats on the 11 miles. I tried the strawberry shot blox. I have trouble chewing while I'm running at a quicker pace so I will just stick to the Gu from now on!!

  5. Howdy - thought I would pop over to answer your questions about my lifesavers. I always have a couple of lifesavers in my hydration belt with me during almost every training run - I have a tendency to get low blood sugar at times. I also tend to get mentally bored during long runs so I have found that even if my blood sugar is fine, the dramatic taste from a lifesaver or two really perks up my saliva and gives my mouth something happy to suck on which in turn gives my mind something to think about. I would say that during this last half, the lifesavers would have been more awesome if I had opened the little packages first or maybe had a roll that you could just break off the top one - I had an incredible amount of difficulty opening that dang little plastic wrapper - between the sweat and the rain and the amount of concentration it took I'd sort of call it a fail, but . . the 2 I did get to eat did exactly what I had hoped - made my mouth less dry and gave me the burst of flavor to keep my tongue and then my mind refreshed - kind of like a "change of scenery" for your mouth and mind. I think you should try it - I think you'd like it!!! Good luck can't wait to hear how it goes! Thanks for reading my blog!! You're awesome!

  6. I know what you mean about labeling yourself and athlete or runner. It's hard to know that fine line that you feel comfortable putting yourself in a category with so many amazing people!! I just tell people I'm a new/beginner runner. LOL. I have only been running for a few months though!
