Some Running and Some Reviewing

I did my run tonight, speedwork for 30 minutes. My iPod died in the middle of it, with no warning and I was frustrated. All in all I did pretty good:

I had some beef jerky (made locally by a farmer we get our meat from) and a cheese stick about 30 minutes before my run. This is a good combination for me, pre-run, but it really needed a solid 45 minutes to settle.

What was new about tonight's run?

I tried the Gu Chmops, strawberry flavor. I like the flavor of the Shot Bloks better (more fruity, less chemical tasting), but the consistency of the Gu Chomps is better (more gummy, less neoprene mouth feel). As for energy, I wasn't able to judge it very well. I will try them with my long run on Saturday and see how they go. Of course, I will report back fully.

What else was new you ask?

Why it was BodyGlide. I used a little on my thighs in hopes of enjoying some of my shorter running shorts that have been collecting dust these last few months. I used a few strokes on each thigh, and adjusted my shorts to the height I knew they would end up at anyways. I expected the BodyGlide to feel smoother on my skin, but instead it felt like thin coating. It felt ok during my run, but at one point the seam of my shorts rubbed my thigh and that was irritating. It made me wonder whether I could just put a few drops of bath oil on my skin before running? Probably not. Anywho, I expected the BodyGlide to be more gliding, but it focuses more on keeping the skin from rubbing. I know that seems like the same thing, but it didn't feel that way. I didn't chafe, but I also didn't glide. Not to mention the cost. I bought the teeny tube and it was over $6 with tax, youch!  Runner's World has a forum on BodyGlideWhat don't they have a forum on? I love Runner's World. There were some good ideas on there, from straight Vaseline to Desitin and they mentioned lanolin. I have a bottle of straight lanolin and I think I will try that for my next short run. I don't want to jeopardize my long run by trying something new and not wearing my running capris.

What are your thoughts? My opinion is still forming on the Gu Chomps and the Body Glide, but if I had to say yeah or nay right now on the BodyGlide, I'd say spend the $6 on a drink at Starbucks after you go for a long run in capris.

Oh, I almost forgot - a great giveaway at Run to the Finish's blog. Check it out!

  1. You know, I've been thinking about this topic for awhile! I've never been a Body Glide user and have never really had a need for it. Lately though, I've been noticing weird chafing underneath my right arm (yes, just my right, and not my left!) I've been debating giving it a try...worth it but pricey, it sounds like?

  2. Hey Heather! You know I think it probably is worth it, for those shorts that just don't sit in the right spot or those areas that just rub no matter what. I am going to try other products and ideas too, to be sure because, you're right, it is pricey.

  3. I've never used body glide, but I've heard of people using petroleum jelly instead. It's cheaper, that's for sure. Don't know about consistency though.

I love taking chomps, but I usually take them before I start running (usually in the car on the way to the trail). By the way, EVERY flavor taste HORRIBLE after brushing your teeth ;)

  4. I've never used body glide. Before long runs I put vaseline on my feet (to prevent blisters) and diaper cream on areas that chaff from my sports bra and those both work great! That is super expensive for a tiny tube!

PowerBar makes some chomp-like things that I've been enjoying lately. The flavors and consistency are both good!

  5. Mmmmm chompy things, I'll look for those.

I think vaseline or petroleum jelly or the lanolin is definitely what I will be trying next, especially since I have all of those things in my bathroom.

  6. I completely agree with you on the chomps vs bloks. The power bar ones are really good flavored but harder to chew up while running
