The Cold, Hard Truth

I haven't been the same since I ran the 10k, which was THREE weeks ago. My training has completely stopped, while my eating has definitely not. I think the Girl Scout cookies threw my sweet tooth into overdrive and the 10k was just too much on my body. Since then, I have developed a bad, bad habit of these brownies I found. These brownies are put out by Fiber One, have calories per brownie and 5 grams of fiber. As a once-in-a-while treat this would be fine, since the ingredient list is relatively innocuous for a packaged baked good.  Alas, 3 or 4 or 5, yes dear friends I said FIVE, brownies per day is just far from harmless.
I came clean to my husband last night, who was a bit horrified until he actually ate one of the brownies. All of my talk of what I am going to eat is great, but right now I need some hard-line discipline, which is looking like straight-up, cold turkey detox. I am excited about my half marathon! I want to wear my summer wardrobe! Yet, I have chosen to act like a petulant child these last few weeks. No more. I am being honest with myself, which means being honest with all of you. As my hero Jillian Michaels would say, 'We start where we start. There's no shame in that'. So, I am starting again. My times are going to be slow again and my distances will be short. A favorite quote fits perfectly here, 'A year from now you will wish you had started today'.
What are some of your favorite motivational sayings? How do you keep them present in your day?

  2. I must say, they are quite tasty... But I think we both need to go on the 'no refined sugar' wagon for a little while!

  3. Too funny because whenever I commit to something (diets especially!), I tell my hubby and he always keeps me on track ... aka makes me think twice about "giving in".

  4. Hahah! You know Megan, I think they did make a difference actually! @ Jess - he definitely helps me a lot and is willing to adhere to pretty much any crazy idea I have, as long as it makes me happy. I really lucked out!

  5. "It’s life. You don’t figure it out. You just climb up on the beast and ride."
    — Rebecca Wells (Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood)

That's my favorite saying. It's what I want my kids to learn early and deep.

  7. "This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man." -Billy S.

Of course, there's a paradox in this. Are you being true to yourself when you eat a brownie, or are you being true to yourself when you have an apple and go for a run. Which self is truer, the you that wants a brownie, or the you that wants to run that half marathon in September. That's a rhetorical question, or course. Obviously you'd rather run the marathon than eat the brownie. But the brownie is here NOW, and the marathon isn't. But every apple is a step in the marathon direction, while every brownie leads down that dark road of self-loathing. You don't have to go there. If you need to quit sugar cold turkey, I've no doubt that you'll do just that.

  8. Ok, joke's over. Can we bridge these 1200 miles between us?

  9. When I'm completely out of control with a snacky food, I replace it. If try to just sit in the other room and *not eat* that doesn't work.

    My two best replacements:
    1) An enormous bowl of air-popped popcorn. Made at home, 10 cups in a bowl, dressed very lightly with spray oil. Filling, good mouth feel, good fiber. Just remember to have tooth floss on hand afterward.

    2) Some fidgety chore that requires both hands, and won't tolerate crumbs. If I'm just on the laptop, I want to be eating. But if I'm knitting or something, that doesn't mix well with eating and keeps me busy until the next real meal rolls around.
