For Real This Time - February Goals

Ok, I have finally decided on my goals for February:

1. Log my food in MFD (My Food Diary) 7 days/week
2. Do two runs each week between 30-45 minutes
3. Do one distance run each week
4. Do Jillian Michaels 2 days/week
5. Do my own workout 1 day/week
6. Eat at least 30 grams of fiber per day
7. Eat at least 90 grams of protein per day

All of these are reasonable and attainable, but require me to stay focused and make smart decisions. Wise = breading the boneless, skinless chicken breast with Panko bread crumbs tonight. Not-wise = Seeking out an entire order of crispy fried chicken tender goodness that a co-worker suggested.

What are some of your favorite high-fiber and/or high-protein foods? I see a lot of beans and fruit in my future as well as chicken breast, tuna and Greek yogurt. Tomorrow is shaping up to be a black bean chili kind of night! Going back to eggs is also a good idea for me. I prefer egg whites and the dogs love the yolks, so egg white omeletes with veggies in a wrap is a great high fiber - high protein combination. I can move my cereal and yogurt to a morning or afternoon snack and just have less cereal.

I am going to put together my first workout now, based on the great exercises that my cousin showed me on Sunday. I am going to find a few good songs and divide out the movements to the song so that I can log it into MFD too.

That makes 2 questions for y'all - your favorite high fiber, high protein foods and your favorite workouts to do at home.

  1. Hmmm...high protein foods and high fiber foods? Eggs definitely for protein...hard-boiled eggs are great as a mid-day snack or a post workout snack. Oatmeal with milk or yogurt is also great, especially if you add nuts and fruit for some added oomph.

Workouts at home tend to not happen. I can sometimes get myself to do some yoga, but I often end up getting sucked in to doing other things and forgetting that I was going to do a workout. I do better in warmer weather when it's not so cold all the time in my apartment. Then I do yoga, ab stuff, and some pilates much more regularly. I know, not very helpful. I do have one set of core exercises that I do somewhat regularly...I'll send that to you when I get home. It's a quick workout that seems to hit most areas in the core.

  2. Thanks Maggie! I will start making my oatmeal with almond milk for an extra bit of protein. I find that some of my best workouts are when I am at the gym in a class, but I have decided not to spend money on a gym membership right now. I miss the boot camp type classes and the step classes! I know I can do them at home, but it's not quite the same. I'll keep an eye out for the core workout, thanks! How did your 1/2 go? It was a few weeks back, right?

  3. half is a week from today. I'll definitely let you know how it goes! I'm feeling better about it after a hilly 8-miler we ran this morning. Right now the weather is sunny and 40, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the only changes will be in the temp rising! The core workout will be headed your way shortly.

  4. I love air-popped popcorn for fiber. Confession: I will make a whole batch (nearly 10 cups, popped) and dress it lightly with spray olive oil and a wee bit of salt, and EAT IT ALL MYSELF. Great crunch, good enjoyable eating, feels like a cheat. Good fiber, some iron. I just need to plan to have time to floss my teeth immediately.

Another idea - canned chickpeas, rinsed, put on a baking sheet at 350 for about 10 minutes become crunchy and nutty. A yummy snack. Not too many at once, though, because they act like beans in the tummy.

I've been lax about keeping up with your blog, and it's really fun to read your progress and ruminations. It's a perfect mix of mundane details and deeper meditations. Love you, chica!

  5. Thanks! I know that there are way better writers out there and that I should focus more on giving out information, but it's fun! The chickpeas sound like a great idea! As for the airpopper, we need a new one. There was a crazed pregnant lady who found she had given hers away and needed an immediate replacement.
