Don't Quit!

I decided to give the treadmill a try for my run yesterday and I am so glad! I think the weather outside is already too hot, at least if I am trying to run any later than 7am.

On Tuesday I decided to take the dogs with me for a run. This was bad idea #1. I was hydrated and fueled well, but it was 4pm and the temperature was in the mid-80's. We made it 15 minutes before I was carrying two bags of poop, sweating like crazy and practically dragging Izzy behind me.

She made it quite clear that she much prefers bounding on the beach after her frisbee than jogging with me. On the way home Izzy and Max basically lunged across the street to get to another to dog - tails wagging, they wanted to play! I was furious; I was too hot to run more than 1 minute at a time, I was carrying bags of poop and the dogs were absolutely uninterested in listening to me! My husband was home by the time I got back to the house, and I flopped down at the table in a pitiful mood. He urged me to go back out, and to try the best I could. I was still angry at myself, and trying very hard to take his advice.

I enjoyed 2 ShotBloks and did go back out! I was still dragging, but I managed to get in my 1/2 hour. I didn't pay much attention to how far I went because I was just trying to think positively and enjoy the fact that I had gone back out to try again.

Yesterday morning I didn't dare run outside, but looked to the consistency of my treadmill. I went for about 20 minutes, with a normal 3 minute warmup. I maintained a 15 minute mile pace, which is slow for me, but I was feeling like I could keep going. I am signed up for the The Jelly Bean race next weekend, and will be doing the 10k. I am going to be walking a lot of this one, and not worrying at all about my time. This weekend I am going to do 5 miles, with no guilt about my time or taking walk breaks. I will just be proud that I got out there and back up to my distances that I know I can do!

  1. i've def made that mistake with my dog.. going out when it's too hot. he would just drag himself toward the shade instead of running lol. and he usually loves it.

  2. The heat really kills me too. I still can't imagine that kind of weather yet. We're still in the 30's until noon! But it will get here and then I'll be up at the crack of dawn to beat it.
Great job getting out there and getting it done!

  3. Great job getting back out there and running. Sometimes just getting out the door is the hardest part of running.

  4. Thanks! I really did underestimate the heat, for me and the pups.

  5. I love this post! I recently had a rather disappointing run of my own, and some of my friends (also runners) urged me to go out and try again. I did and it made me feel SO much better. Sometimes we just have off days/runs, but as long as you get back out there, that's what counts!

    Keep up the great work!!

  6. Kudos to you for sticking with it! My second training plan started today and I'm hoping that I can stay that motivated and positive about stuff for the next 10 weeks.

BTW, now that my training has started again, I will be blogging way more often, so expect to see my comments popping up on your blog a lot more often than they did this past month.
